I have no doubts - this city will thrive again.
March was personal.
The fear crept in quietly. A headline here, a press conference update there, the low hum of anxiety that became the background noise of daily life in the UAE. We are a country that has built its identity on being a place apart - neutral, stable, a bridge between worlds. And yet here we are, geographically and economically wedged between a conflict we did not choose and consequences we cannot avoid.
Most of us stayed. We padelled (not a verb), we mall-ed (definitely should be a verb), we showed up to work and pretended the news wasn't open in another tab. Resilience, or something that looked like it.
But March let us keep our feelings mostly private.
April won't.
For small businesses - agencies, consultancies, independent operators, the entire ecosystem of SMEs that quietly powers this city, April is where the conflict stops being background noise and starts showing up on the balance sheet. Clients pausing. Budgets frozen mid-conversation. Projects that were "confirmed, just need sign-off" suddenly needing another round of sign-off.
I have spoken to enough founders and agency heads in the last few weeks to know that this is not anecdotal. This is the market, collectively holding its breath.
nuja is in this too - I am not writing from a safe distance.
What I keep coming back to is this. The UAE has weathered things before. 2008. COVID. Every regional flare-up that was supposed to destabilise what was built here. It didn't. Not because the impact wasn't real, but because enough people chose to stay and keep going, even when going looked different from what they'd planned.
I think that is what April asks of us. Not optimism. Not a pivot strategy. Just the decision to stay in it.
Will we get through this? Yes, absolutely. In the exact same way, looking exactly the same, doing exactly what we were doing before? Not so much.
That's not a loss. That's just what surviving actually looks like.
